Update your Playlist; My Current top 5 African Songs

Kitoko

Ain’t nothing more sexy than this SwahiliLingala fusion. Avril and L Rice needed a translator for the collaboration to work, due to their lack of a common language and damn it the chemistry resulted into pure magic! Music is indeed a universal language. Bold and risky but boy- oh-boy! I am glad they did it.

Incase you don’t know

I really love how Jux has been incorporating live aspects of music to his sound with his past couple of releases. On this one, it’s hard to miss the guitar and piano strokes that provide such an enjoyable listening experience. You’d actually be forgiven for thinking that this was a live performance. What a way for Jux to launch himself into the Kenyan music market! Such an amazing piece of art!

Crush

I have talked about my love for this song on a previous blog post. (Go read if you haven’t). Beautiful doesn’t even begin to describe it. From the vocals, to the instrumentals, to the video, Otile Brown stays flying that Kenyan flag high.

SMA

First time I heard this song I thought Skylar Grey was on it. Rowlene is incredibly gifted with amazing vocals. And yoh! I knew Nasty C was talented but damn I have been sleeping on him! At this point, I am starting to see why AKA referred to South Africa as the Mecca of Hip Hop. I still have my reservations but I could see why he would say so) This is one of one of my all time best Hip Hop Songs I have ever listened to from Africa.

Katapila Remix

Who the hell knew how good Fena could sound on a Dancehall track? Dufla will have just the right female artist jumping onto his track and taking it to a whole new unimaginable level. The only way you can enjoy this song is by by blasting it out at volume 100. Trust me.

Bonus tracks

Kiboko

Honestly, I didn’t like this song first time I heard it. But then I kept hearing it over and over again. I’d find myself singing along and thinking about it even when it wasn’t playing. And just like that, like a curse that I couldn’t escape, here I am talking about it and obviously now totally loving it.

F*** you too

Are you following the f*** you challenge currently trending in Nigeria? Because if you aren’t, you need to. It started with Kizz Daniel-a totally different side of him (musically speaking) from what I have experienced from him before. Among others, Sarkodie, Lil Kesh, Falz the Bahd Guy, Dremodrizzy, Ice Prince and Tiwa Savage (who killed it, btw) have already jumped on it.

Eva Alordiah has given a sneak peek but will be dropping the entire cover on Tuesday. I’ve been looking forward to her cover way before she even announced she’d be doing it. The girl has some sick rhymes up her sleeves. Still waiting for the day she will get the recognition she truly deserves. For some reason, she reminds me of Lauryn Hill.

Just check out the #fvckyouchallenge on Insta and thank me later. Also, tell me what your favorite cover is.

I would like to know what you are currently listening to and what you think about the songs on my playlist.

New Music Video Alert: Jux- “Utaniua”

The best songs of all time are definitely those that are created from real life experiences. (Ask Taylor Swift). They bring out unfiltered emotions of artists, making them real and believe-able. Tanzanian RNB artist, Jux‘ latest single “Utaniua” is no exception.

Produced by Bob Maneck of AM Records, (who also produced “Umenikamata“), “Utaniua” (which means you will kill me) is a soulful RNB track that talks about Jux’ recently ended relationship with singer Vanessa Mdee. In the song, Jux expresses that he still does not know what he failed in terms of the relationship and where exactly things went wrong. The lyrics are simple, easy to understand and remember. The distinct piano and guitar strokes in the back ground add an urban pleasant feel.

The video was directed by Tanzania’s Hascana. The great and clear picture quality will enable it to compete on an international level. And while a non- Swahili speaking audience may not understand the lyrics, the story line brought out in the video is one that they would follow.

You can tell from the passion expressed through his voice that Jux poured out his soul on this one, making the song such a beautiful artistic creation.
